Personal Development - On the road to freedom

About

Andrew Jobling was born in Melbourne Australia and was the middle child of three. Consequently he had a serious case of middle child syndrome, or the "Me Me Me - it's all about me" disease!

If he wasn't getting attention he wasn't happy. He vividly remembers the first day of many school holidays and not getting his way, nor the attention he craved. So, feeling unloved and unappreciated he would take his pillow and head out into the big bad world vowing never to return (The cry baby was running away!). He would go for days on end, facing inclement weather, fighting off fierce animals and scrounging for his food. Well, he says that's what it felt like - he was actually only gone for about 30 minutes because he got tired and lonely. What a sissy!!

He loved sport and had an aptitude for it. His focus on Australian Rules Football lead him to the St Kilda Football Club in Melbourne at the age of 17. He never had exceptional talent, but he had enough. It was more his attitude and work ethic that led him to play at the highest level for 7 years playing nearly 150 games, including 24 at senior level.

It was an interesting time at The Saints - certainly not their most successful era. Although they did end up with a nice collection of wooden spoons! It was a time when every win was celebrated as a premiership. In fact, come to think of it, every score was celebrated as a premiership!

Andrew had the reverse problem to many people - he was really skinny! For a male, particularly a sporting one with an ego this was not a good thing!

He was so skinny that some of his nicknames included; the human pipecleaner and the chopstick with ears! He was so skinny that even the weaklings would kick sand in his face! He once got offered a job in a bar to stand around - he was so skinny he made the drinks look bigger!

I
t was through what he now knows about eating (In 'Eat Chocolate, Drink Alcohol and be Lean & Healthy') and exercise that he was able to put on muscle, lose fat and maintain it!

His love of sport led him to studying Physical Education - that was really the only criteria by which he chose his life long career! In fact it wasn't until the 3rd year of his course that he realised it was a teaching degree. He was quite happily going along playing sport and  getting acquainted with alcohol and the oppostie sex when he was told he needed to arrange teaching rounds. When he asked why he was reminded that he was in the 3rd year of a teaching degree!

At the end of this 4 years of study, whilst he never intended to be a teacher, he thought he had better make use of this degree he had! So he started his full time working career as a teacher.

Andrew taught secondary students mathematics and physical education for 4 years. Just long enough to realise that his passion was to educate and inspire others, but not so long that he strangled a teenager!

Andrew started working in gyms in the early 90's and thus began his passion for fitness training and then nutrition and more recently helping people develop the mindset to create long term change.

The transition in Andrew's approach has evolved through vast experience. he came into his personal training career with a professional sporting background and mentality. This is more commonly referred to as the 'No pain, No Gain' or the 'Meat Head' approach! If his his clients were able to walk after a workout he felt that he hadn't trained them hard enough! If they ate chocolate they were week! If they vomitted after a workout he thought it was their way of saying "Thankyou"!

This was how he approached his fitness and health and so he expected it of everyone else. It didn't take too long before he needed to rethink his strategy! His clients weren't turning up, they were cancelling appointments and they were getting injured. His first reaction was that they were "Soft", "weak" and "Not up to it". But after a little bit of self examination he realised that he was an idiot!

He understood that not everyone wanted to train like a maniac. The majority of people want to be fitter, leaner and healthier for sure - but more importantly they wanted and needed to enjoy the experience. If they didn't enjoy it why would they keep turning up?

This was a new concept for Andrew, but one he needed to embrace if he were to succeed in this industry. This lead Andrew to his passion for nutrition and helping people find the balanced approach that would work for them long term. Hence his book 'Eat Chocolate, Drink Alcohol and be Lean & Healthy' came to be. He has always loved chocolate and alcohol (or any other indulgence) - how great to be able to combine them as a vital part of a happy and healthy life.

In late 2003 Andrew started on a path of intense personal development - Boy did he need it! Today that path continues and has lead him to some significant learning that he loves to share with and empower others to achieve greatness in their lives. Whether in the health aspect of their lives or any other, he has learned that the principles of success apply with 100% predictability.

A large part of Andrew growth process was the influence of his mother Sue. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in the late 80's and then further diagnosed with secondary cancer in the liver 2 years later. This began a 15 year journey to fight a disease that would never rest. Her incredible courage and desire to live instigated changes in her life that made the last 15 the most joy filled and satisfying of her life. Sadly she lost her fight with cancer in December 2004.

Andrew learned much from his mum, Sue. From the power of giving to the power of the mind as she faced her motality every day for 15 years and used this adversity to bring more joy into her life than she had had in a long time. His love and respect for her is overwhelming and the inspiration of her courage motivates Andrew every day.

He is currently writing a book based around the lessons of Susan Jobling's life. Would you like an exerpt for the unnamed book about Sue Jobling?
