Week Three - Stay Focussed

STAY FOCUSSED

Beware The Dream Stealers!

Whilst this is meant to be a joke, it is truer than you think. Dream Stealers are everywhere - BEWARE

Welcome to week three. If you have come the whole journey so far you should be feeling positive about continuing on to create some significant long term results.

Are you? Great and well done

If you are not or if you are just joining us this week - welcome. You have a bit of catching up to do. Please go back to Six Weeks to a Better You and follow the plan from Goal setting, week one, week two and back to here.

These are vital steps and you would be strongly advised to take them if long term results are the aim. If not just enjoy this weeks insight.

This week is dedicated to protect you from the strategies used to lull you into a false sense of security and ultimately derail you from your goal. Beware ...

THE DREAM STEALERS

There are 4 of them:

  1. The Quick Fix
  2. The Packaging
  3. The Credible Endorsements
  4. Negative Peer Influence

1. THE QUICK FIX

Would you like attain all your goals in a minimum of time with a minimum of effort?

Of course you would - we all would.

Many companies and products take advantage of this common human trait and prey on those desperate to get quick results by promising quick results. You may have seen or experienced some of the following:

New! Mini AromaLean®
STOP FOOD CRAVINGS NOW!

One whiff of the unique AromaLean® formula offers INSTANT SELF CONTROL for people who are trying to lose weight, but are continually faced with tempting, fattening, unhealthy foods*
- Yeah right!!!

Please note the fine print at the bottom of the ad. In case you can't read it it says:
"Warning: Each tablet contains approx 500 tape worm eggs. If malnutrition occurs seek medical advice."
- Is being dead okay!

- Only if you wear them over your mouth!!

- And put it all back on in the next hour!!

Penetrating Gel Emulsifies Fat On Contact

- it is made with hydrochloric acid - it will dissolve anything on contact!!

Now, the best - an oldie but a goodie!

TAKE MY ADVICE THEY DON'T WORK! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A QUICK FIX.

Avoid anything stating:

  • Diet
  • Easy
  • No effort required
  • Short term weight loss
  • Quick and amazing results
  • No exercise required
  • Instant results
  • Anything that sounds too good to be true - in 99.99% of cases it is.

These attempts will only put you back or beyond where you started and make the journey forward one step more difficult.

Remember that any diet or quick fix that fails, was designed to fail. It is not you and you are not a failure. You are simply a victim of the fat/weight loss vultures waiting to prey on those with a burning desire to be the best they can be.

The sooner you realise it will take some consistent ongoing effort the sooner you will be the person you want to be.

2. THE PACKAGING

When you are shopping for food and you are trying to get in shape would you be influenced by products that come labelled with statements such as:

  • Fat free?
  • Low fat?
  • Lite?
  • Diet ...?
  • Lo cal?
  • Cholesterol free?
  • Low G.I.
  • No added sugar
  • Gluten free

... and the list goes on.

As a nation we have become so fat, sugar and cholesterol phobic that we try to avoid these foods at all costs. In most cases we do this to the detriment of our health and ongoing potential to create our desired long term results.

It is interesting to note what has happened in Australia since the time when we have become so fat conscious. Since the time that all these products have started popping up on the supermarket shelves, as a nation we are fatter and more unhelathy than ever! Interesting hey?

The question is why?

The answer is simple. When we remove fat from a product we take out the most important element - taste! Taste needs to be replaced. The most common ingredient to replace it with is sugar. Take for example a fat free salad dressing - have a look at the ingredients and see what the number one ingredient is. I would bet a lot of money it is sugar!

When we then go and remove the sugar we have to replace the taste associated with that.  When a product is advertised as a 'diet' product or 'no added sugar' in many cases it is artificially sweetened with substances that are poisonous to the human body. Substances such as; aspartame, phenylalanine, cyclamic acid just to name a few.

Here is what has been said about these substances:

"Aspartame sugar substitutes cause worrying symptoms from memory loss to brain tumours."

"Excessive levels of phenylalanine in the brain can cause the levels of seratonin in the brain to decrease, leading to emotional disorders such as depression"

"The use of Cyclamic acid was banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after reports that ingestion of large quantities of cyclamates appeared to cause cancer in some animals"

All diet drinks are artificially sweetened. People will often ask which is better coke or diet coke?, pepsi or pepsi max? etc. Sherry Strong, celebrity nutritionalist will always respond with the question; "would you rather be hit with a baseball bat or a sledge hammer?".

What Sherry means is that drinking the Coke or Pepsi is being hit by the baseball bat. This is bad, but not as bad as being hit with a sledge hammer which she likens to drinking the products with artificial sweetners.

In addition to the artificial sweetners many of these so called 'diet' products are full of highly refined ingredients artificial colours, flavours, enhancers and many other ingredients that if you really new enough about them you wouldn't put them anywhere near your body, let a lone in your mouth!

READ THE LABELS

Instead of just looking at the nutritional chart and how many calories, fat and carbohydrates you need to look at the actual ingredients.

The things to watch for are:

  1. Sugar - this will be listed in many ways, such as: sugar, sucrose, syrup, honey, glucose, malt, maltose, malt extract, maltodextrin, dextrose, fructose etc. See how many types of sugar you casn identify in the example above?
  2. Numbers - these refer to artificial ingredients. For example sweetners 952 & 954, preservatives 220 & 223 just to name a couple. Avoid these at all cost.
  3. Synthetic fat - this will be identified in two ways. Look for either 'hydrogentated' or 'partially hydrogentated oils' in the ingredient list. In the nutritional chart look for a difference in 'total fat' and 'saturated fat'. If it is not stated what this difference is then it is most probably a dangerous sythetic fat.

You need to be looking at the ingedient list for the products with the most natural ingredients. All of the information you need can be found in much more detail in 'Eat Chocolate, Drink Alcohol and be Lean & Healthy'.

3. THE CREDIBLE ENDORSEMENTS

We trust great sports people, celebrities and we trust credible associations to give us information that is true, endose products that are good for us have our best interests at heart. Unfortunately, in fact quite disturbingly, this is a niave way to think and in a lot of cases (not all) misleading and dangerous for our long term health.

There are well known people out there (and I will not name names as it is not good for my ongoing health!) that will promote a product, that I would bet a lot of money that they would never have eaten at the time they were promoting it. This is  done all for the sake of a massive endorsement cheque at the end of it. This is called 'selling of the soul!'

Not only that, there are highly credible health associations and foundations out there publicly approving the health benefits of well known fast food that just aren't there. All for what?

DOLLARS!

This is wrong! People, especially children are highly influenced by sports stars and tv celebrities and will take their words as gospel. These personalities have a responsibility to foster honesty, integrity and whats best for the general population. In many cases this is not happening.

We will always listen to higher authorities about what we should be eating. So when food that is obviously not good for us is endorsed by these foundations, they are showing us that we are not that important. In fact all that is important to them is money! They are creating a situation that they have been established to prevent - that is mis-information and contributing to the obesity and ill health of the nation.

Again, the message here is loud and strong. Don't believe everything you hear, read and see. Even if the source seems to be credible.

Do your own research and simply learn to read and interpret labels & ingredient lists and you will be healthy, happy and equipped to help others do the same. You can change the world with this information - get out and spread the word!

 4. NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE

In the previous or current pursuit of trying to achieve significant achievements with your health and body you may have heard statments such as:

"Go on just have one beer, it won't kill you"

"You are so boring since you started being healthy. You used to be fun"

"Stop making all of us feel guilty because you think you are so good"

"Go on dear, I made this beautiful chocolate cake just for you, because I know how much you love it"

"Why don't you just relax and enjoy yourself - you don't have to act like a nun all your life"

"You are looking quite drawn around the face - are you sure this is good for you?"

"You are spending so much time exercising we never see you any more"

These comments come from the 'Dream Stealers'. In many cases they will be people that you care about most. They think they are helping you, or at least they say that they are telling this for your benefit. The reality is that your improvement makes them feel bad about themselves. Instead of making the effort to improve themselves, it is easier to bring you down.

They do this for their own selfish reasons NOT with your best interests at heart. Don't be fooled and don't succumb.

It is up to you to stay focussed and find people that will lift you and encourage you to be the best you can.

Keep your eyes firmly fixed on your dream and do the things you know will get you the results you want. Then filter out all the quick fixes, clever marketing, lies and negative influences and you will invariably come across in you attempts to do what most most people never will.

Keep this quote firmly fixed in your mind and read it to yourself daily:

"I will do today what most people won't so that I can be tomorrow what most people can't"
